Auto Expo 2012: Suzuki Motorcycle India rolls out two new products, Hayate and Swish 125

Auto Expo 2012: Suzuki Motorcycle India rolls out two new products, Hayate and Swish 125

The subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIPL), came out with two new products, Hayate and Swish 125, on the inaugural day of the Auto Expo 2012. The Hayate marks Suzuki Motorcycle India’s entry into mass market motorcycle category, whereas the Swish 125 is an addition to its scooter range, Access.

The theme of Suzuki Motorcycle India at the Auto Expo 2012 is ‘Apna Way of Life’ which highlights the company’s efforts for creating vehicles according to the view point of the customers and how the lives of its customers ‘relate to the products’.

Ichiro Kondo, Managing Director, SMIPL, said “Suzuki two-wheelers in India are testimony to the company's DNA of creating Value Packed Products. Suzuki is known worldwide for superior technology bikes such as the legendary Hayabusa. We intend to showcase the same in India. Suzuki is fully committed to developing products that meet the Indian customer's demand by utilising its dynamic technological advantage and its human resources."

Atul Gupta, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, states “SMIPL plans to provide the Indian two-wheeler customers a refreshing new experience in every segment and category. The launches today address the need for products that are stylish, high performance, affordable, easy to maintain and fuel efficient. We see the Hayate securing a significant and distinct space for itself in the Indian motorcycle market by serving the needs of the first time motorcycle owner and people with regular commuting needs. The Swish 125 is ideal for value seekers - young urban couples who look for mobility solutions that can complement their lifestyle."

Suzuki Motorcycle India aims to become one of the leading two-wheeler manufacturers in the Indian market. To fulfil this aim SMIPL will work towards expanding its production capacity and improving its network. The annual production capacity will be increased to 5.4 lac units from 3.6 lac units, by 2013.

The latest motorcycle named Hayate, which means ‘Fresh Breeze’ or ‘Swift Wind’ in Japanese, is also a reminder of the popular Hayabusa. It is a 110cc bike and is targeted at the middle class Indians for their daily transport needs as it provides good fuel efficiency at an affordable price.

Swish 125, a power packed bike, is targeted at the youngsters in India. It has contemporary style and trendy looks. The Swish 125 will be equipped with a powerful 4-stroke 125cc engine that ensures smooth ride. It is going to be competitively priced at Rs. 45,431 (Delhi Ex-Showroom) and will be available at the SMIPL dealers by March this year.

Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIPL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan. It follows the same manufacturing philosophy of its parent company, which is ‘Value Packed Products’. The company develops quality two-wheelers for its customers. SMIPL has been operating in India since February, 2006.

2012 Suzuki Dealer Meeting

It is a fact that times are tight in the motorcycle industry these days, but the vibe at the 2012 Suzuki Dealer Meeting, held at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort & Convention Center in Florida, gave us a vision of what to expect from Suzuki this year and into the future. Motorcycle sales may not be growing in leaps and bounds but it has shown a slight increase for Suzuki from 2010 – 2011. This year we don’t see the elimination of any Suzuki motorcycle models but instead are introduced to some additions and upgrades to many of its existing models. Suzuki showcased their updated 2012 Suzuki GSX-R1000 and unveiled their new Boulevard C50T Classic cruiser along with the new V-Strom Adventure models.

Creating a positive buzz for dealers is the purpose of any dealer meeting and Suzuki’s efforts did just that when it came to showing dealer appreciation, presenting an executive plan and by simply offering a fun experience. Awards were handed out to top selling dealers and brand ambassadors such as
Travis Pastrana and Ricky Carmichael pumped up the crowd to create excitement about what’s to come for 2012. Suzuki also flew out top athletes such as current AMA Supersport rider Elena Myers, Jordan Suzuki AMA Pro Superbikers Roger Lee Hayden and Ben Bostrom along with factory Suzuki motocross rider Brett Metcalfe. All the dealers attending had the opportunity to meet and get autographs from Suzuki’s top racing programs. Suzuki even took it to new heights and rented out the New York City section of Universal Studios Orlando allowing dealers and press to jump on all the rides and take in the amusement park attractions without large public crowds.

Suzuki is focused on rebuilding its brand and uplifting dealer moral by coining the phrase “Way of Life” as part of its marketing efforts. Suzuki’s Senior Director of Motorcycle ATV/Marine, Larry Vandiver, presented marketing plans to expand existing dealer incentives and efforts to improve social media avenues that will improve sales and brand awareness.

Takashi Iwatsuki, Chairman of American Suzuki Motor Corp, spoke of remaining positive through this sluggish economic climate but reinforced the importance of the keys to success. He acknowledged that good marketing tactics and a solid product strategy plan focused on expanding models in growth segments is what will keep Suzuki on track.

Improved 2012 GSX-R1000

The popular Suzuki GSX-R1000 gets engine and chassis changes to improve its performance. Engine upgrades include redesigned pistons with reshaped valve tappets, crankcase ventilation holes, increased compression ratio and an optimized ECU. Designed to improve low to mid-range torque, these changes help achieve better throttle response and improved fuel economy at an estimated 8%. The new GSX-R loses the twin pipes and gets a new redesigned single exhaust contributing to more mid-range power and sheds 4.4 pounds off the bike. Additional improvements were made to the chassis, suspension and some minor changes to the styling include pin-striped wheels and color accents. More details on Suzuki’s flagship sport bike can be seen in our 2012 Suzuki GSX-R1000 First Look article and photo gallery.

V-Strom Dual Sport Models

Much of the buzz and talk at the dealer show revolved around the introduction of Suzuki’s new V-Strom 650 ABS and the V-Strom 1000 Dual Sport models. According to Suzuki analysis, a strong growth segment is the Adventure Touring market where competing manufacturers have been introducing new models and expanded product lines. The V-Strom 1000 remains virtually untouched for 2012 but the Adventure model is available with touring hard case saddlebags and topcase. Pricing on the V-Strom 1000 is $10,399 MSRP for the base model available in Pearl Mira Red/Black. The Adventure model goes for $10,999 and is offered in Pearl Nebular Black.

Redesigned for 2012, the V-Strom 650 ABS was improved utilizing user research data which provided Suzuki with pertinent information directly from consumers testing the bike and making suggested changes. Suzuki has improved the V-Strom 650 ABS with a sleeker, lighter design that translates into better handling and looks. Improved wind buffeting and heat displacement keeps riders shielded from wind drag and rising heat from the engine. Comforts include an electronically controlled idle that automatically adjusts to the environment and an updated instrument cluster with hand controls. The bike loses 13 pounds and has new pistons, rings and cam combination offering a mid-range power delivery fitting for touring applications. Exclusive to the V-Strom 650 ABS and not available from competitors are the aluminum frame and swingarm plus the largest fuel tank in its class coming in at 5.3 gallons. Our contributing editor Frank Melling recently had the opportunity to test ride this new machine in our 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 650 ABS First Ride article where you can read more on what this machine is all about.

Unveiled at the dealer show is the new Adventure model which appeals to the type of rider looking for a comfortable and affordable Dual Sport touring bike. Our very own Managing Editor, Bart Madson, is currently testing the Adventure model on the
Blue Ridge Mountain Wee-Strom Adventure. Offered only in Glass Sparkle Black the Adventure model comes with large aluminum side cases, front accessory bars and an adjustable windscreen. MSRP for the Adventure model is $9799 while the standard V-Strom 650 ABS model has an MSRP of $8299 and is available in Metallic Fox Orange and Glass Sparkle Black.

With Adventure Touring becoming more popular, Suzuki is offering a new accessory line that caters to the needs of Dual Sport Adventure riders. Offering a host of upgrades for its V-Strom models, Suzuki offers hard side and top cases, accessory bars, windscreens and seats among other options. One unique accessory available for the V-Strom 650 ABS is two different sized seats other than the standard seat that comes with the bike with a set seat height of 835mm or 32.9 inches. The taller saddle offers 20mm more height while the other saddle sits 20mm lower, allowing riders to customize the bike to their comfort level. Other accessories include heated grips, hand guards, center stand, chain guard and an under cowling.

2012 Boulevard Cruiser Lineup

Rod Lapusnak, Suzuki’s National Sales Manager, reviewed Suzuki’s success with its popular Boulevard cruiser lineup stating that Suzuki’s cruiser sales outpaced the competitors by 12.5% in 2011. With this in mind Suzuki introduced two new cruiser models, the Boulevard C50T Tourer and the Boulevard C50T Classic. The C50T Tourer is available in blue and white and comes with an adjustable windscreen, studded seats, white wall tires and large-capacity, textured-leather saddlebags with Boulevard emblems at an affordable $9499 MSRP. On the C50T Classic you get white wall tires and a studded seat that add to the vintage styling of this low cost cruiser with an MSRP of $7999.

Overall the atmosphere at the 2012 Suzuki dealer meeting was up-beat and optimistic. With economic times still on the down side, Suzuki was advocating for dealers to become more educated on Suzuki and actively get involved in sales training. Dealers have access to the Suzuki University Sales Academy, where sales reps learn more about Suzuki products, promotions and sales tactics through an incentive plan that pays out rewards and prizes for involvement. The new and improved models along with the low price points are what make Suzuki appealing to consumers and should give dealers an edge for 2012. Bautista: Suzuki Still Strong in This Season

Alvaro Bautista was still confident that the Suzuki MotoGP 2011 is still robust in the face of this even though they start out with a badly broken leg because of his injury.

Spanish rider was the only Suzuki rider in the squad for the Japanese factory MotoGP team for 2011. However, he missed the series opener in Qatar and the second series in Spain due to an injury during training at the Losail Circuit.

New Bautista returned to the track racing at the GP of Portugal just six weeks after the groin injury. However, he's hard to compete in the race at Estoril Circuit is thus finished in 13th place, aka caretaker. He was almost involved an accident with Karel Abraham.

After the official test which lasted a day after the race, Bautista felt Suzuki make a progress. With his physical condition continues to improve, he believes that they can achieve even better results at Le Mans, France, this weekend.

"Targetku is able to reach the finish line this year, because I could not do in 2010-and then build it again in the rest of this season," said Bautista.

"There's still quite a lot of series are left in the season so we still have time to show what we could do."

"A few laps I did during the test either because they show that the new chassis is the result of improvements so that we will use it in France and hopefully can help us to be more competitive."

Last year, Bautista was forced to just be spectators at Le Mans since he had an accident during training, which makes it a shoulder injury. This year, Bautista wants to look good even though he admits still feeling pain in his leg.

"I've worked hard since the GP of Portugal and tests to improve kebugaranku and ready to face Le Mans and the rest of the season," said Bautista.

"It's nice to be back again to the track at Estoril, but it showed me that I still have a lot of work to fitness during the race. I plan to go to Le Mans with better conditions than in Estoril and of course with better conditions than with when I came to France years ago!

2011 Suzuki GSXR-1000

The 2011 Suzuki GSXR-1000 is a motorcycle that has been fine-tuned and developed on racetracks and on asphalt around the world. It’s a machine that resolutely defines dominance, having won an incredible seven straight AMA Superbike Championships in a row. With its class-leading engine, chassis and suspension technology, there’s no question that the GSXR-1000 is the undisputed superbike of our era.

"NEW FOR 2011"
The 2011 Suzuki GSXR-1000 is offered in a new Metallic Triton Blue/Glass Spash White finish with updated graphics as well as a Solid Black/Metallic Mat Titanium Silver.

2011-Suzuki-GSXR-1000

2011 Suzuki GSXR-1000 Features

Engine Features

The class-leading GSXR is powered by a 999cc four-cylinder powerplant with a bore and stroke of 74.5mm x 57.3mm and a compression ratio of 12.8:1. This engine delivers enhanced throttle response across the entire RPM range and offers high potential for racetrack performance. The engine is built with high-quality titanium valves, forged pistons and shot-peened conrods.

The combustion chamber accommodates large intake and exhaust valves. Intake valve size is 31mm and exhaust valve size is 25mm.

The engine's oversquare bore and stroke of 74.5mm x 57.3mm gives it specifically increased performance at high RPM.

The compact engine allowed Suzuki engineers to incorporate a shorter wheelbase design with a longer swingarm for improved racetrack performance.

Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM)-plated cylinders integrated into the upper crankcase helps reduce friction, improve heat transfer, increase durability and provides better ring seal.

The SDTV (Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve) system uses two butterfly valves in each throttle body barrel, the primary valve controlled by the rider via the twist grip and the secondary valve controlled by the ECM.

Each throttle body feeds two cylinders and each throttle body barrel carries two ultra-fine-atomization, 12 hole injectors that produce a fine fuel mist for more complete combustion. This ultimately reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. In addition, the GSXR-1000 is outfitted with Iridium spark plugs, which produce a strong spark for efficient combustion.

A unique Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) system allow the rider to select one of three fuel injection and ignition system maps, adjusting power delivery to suit personal preference. Using a button on the left handlebar control module, the rider can instantaneously switch between the three available maps, which are designated A, B and C as displayed on the instrument panel.

A large, efficient radiator with a trapezoidal shape developed on factory team racebikes and a trapezoidal engine oil cooler both help reduce drag. The oil cooler's trapezoidal shape (instead of the more conventional rectangular shape), allows the lower fairing to be narrower, which helps improve aerodynamics and reduce drag.

Suzuki Advanced Exhaust System (SAES) uses an under-engine chamber with low-slung, large-volume race-inspired titanium mufflers.

Transmission Features

The back torque-limiting clutch incorporates the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) for light clutch pull and optimum clutch performance. This cable-operated back-torque-limiting clutch makes for efficient clutch operation with superb feel.

Chassis Features

The 2011 GSXR-1000 is equipped with a compact twin-spar cradle frame made of five cast sections. The frame is paired with a one-piece die-cast rear subframe and an arched swingarm made of three castings.

Lightweight Showa Big Piston front Forks (BPF) 43mm fork design eliminates the internal cartridge assembly inserted into each fork leg and instead uses a single 39.6mm upper piston riding against the inside wall of the inner fork tube. This endurance-race-proven design offers more effective valving, with more controlled compression to deliver better feedback to the rider.

The Showa rear shock works through an aluminum alloy linkage mounted on the swingarm and an extruded aluminum alloy link rod connected to the frame. The rear shock offers adjustable rebound damping, spring preload, and both high-speed and low-speed compression damping.

Electronically controlled steering damper uses the ECM to monitor motorcycle speed and adjust damping force as needed.

The front brakes feature fully floating 310mm discs and rigid, lightweight race-proven monoblock forged radial-mount calipers.

The rear disc brake works with a single piston caliper mounted above the swingarm.

The edgy and clean GSXR-1000 styling incorporates fairing and bodywork details aimed at reducing turbulence and drag.

Attention to rider comfort includes a carefully shaped seat and adjustable footpegs (the footpegs remain three-way adjustable - 14mm in a horizontal and vertical range). A tailsection cover is also included for solo rides or track days.

The capacity of sculpted fuel tank is 17.5 liters (4.6 US gal). Only the Californian spec. model has a 16.5 liters (4.4 US gal) fuel tank.

The GSXR-1000 has distinctive multi-reflector headlight with vertically stacked high and low-beam halogen bulbs centered between position lights on each side. The front and rear turn signals feature clear lenses over amber bulbs.

Instruments include a silver-ringed analog tachometer with LCD speedometer. LCD readouts include odometer, dual trip meters, reserve trip meter, clock, coolant temperature/oil pressure warning indicator, gear position indicator, lap timer/stopwatch, S-DMS setting indicator and bar-graph indicating the instrument lighting level, or brightness.
